Air Quality Monitoring
A COMMUNITY-BASED HYPER-LOCAL NETWORK OF LOW-COST REAL-TIME AIR QUALITY MONITORING SENSORS IN TURNER STATION, BALTIMORE MARYLAND
PURPOSE:
In recognition of the Turner Station community’s stated concern regarding the human health impacts of local air pollution and poor air quality, The Turner Station Conservation Teams, Inc. and CEEJH at the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health (MIAEH), University of Maryland School of Public Health (UMD-SPH) are entering into a Community-University Partnership with the goal of establishing a community-based hyper-local network of low-cost real-time air quality monitoring sensors in Turner Station, Baltimore, Maryland to gather data of the pollution levels.
Many communities in Maryland are regularly and adversely impacted by environmental health hazards related to industrial and infrastructural operations. This project’s goal is to provide baseline data for air quality in Turner Station, MD to gain a deeper understanding and inform policymakers and local residents of how air pollution is affecting the health of the community in the present. The results will display ways on avoiding and mitigating exposures to toxic hazards and to improve local and state regulations. Such findings will prove useful for future monitoring and management of air quality.
